The Chief Peguis Trail Extension is an arterial extension of a major roadway connecting two major thoroughfares in Winnipeg: Henderson Highway and Lagimodière Boulevard. The $300,000.00 construction project was completed using a Private Public Partnership model with DBF2 and the City of Winnipeg. Over 10 kilometers of multi-use pathways have added value for residents while creating important connections into the surrounding residential neighbourhood with existing and proposed greenways and trails. Trails are lit with decorative light standards and feature unique wayfinding signage which provides directional orientation for trail users. There are three sitting areas along the way which provide seating, garbage receptacles, interpretive panels, and gabion wind breaks. In four key intersections there are community node features with gathering areas and resting spaces. Unique interpretive signage highlights important ecological and historical concepts along the pathways.
Native plants and environmentally appropriate planting was selected to complement and enhance existing vegetation and new topographical features. A Tree and Natural Area Preservation and Protection Plan was developed in conjunction with the City of Winnipeg Forestry department to ensure significant vegetation would remain protected and preserved during the construction process. Prairie, woodland and riparian shrub woodland were three of the different plant communities used to add wildlife habitat and seasonal interest. Local artist Peter Sawatzky was comissioned to create ten bronze wolf sculptures to anchor the current end points of the extension. The realistic looking wolf packs celebrate these majestic creatures while referencing Chief Peguis signature from historically significant treaty documents.
DBF2 project consultants: Terracon Development Ltd., Bituminex Paving Ltd., Taillieu Construction Ltd., Morrison Hershfield, Gateway Construction & Engineering Ltd., Genivar Consultants Limited Partnership, Kupskay Consulting Ltd., Fengate Capital Management Ltd. & Smith Carter Architects and Engineers Inc.
